Future Cemetery experimented with new approaches like projection, augmented reality, theatre and Bluetooth soundscapes to engage visitors with the stunning but sensitive space of Arnos Vale cemetery in Bristol.

In 170 years of operation, Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust has handled 320,000 dead bodies, equivalent to ¾ of the living population of Bristol. The team, a collaboration between the University of Bath’s Centre for Death and Society and media company Calling the Shots, utilised mobile, projection and AR technologies to build a future cemetery model, where Victorian past and digital present are woven together, confronting us to think about our own mortality in the modern era.
